Serbia unveils new ‘Komarac’ Suicide Drones

The Serbian Ministry of Defense presented new drones on Sunday for, as it is stated, “superiority on the modern battlefield”.

“Following global trends in armaments and modern security challenges, the Military Technical Institute in Belgrade worked intensively during 2024 on the development and creation of conditions for the production in defense industry factories of various variants of unmanned aerial vehicles, among which the ‘Komarac’ suicide drones occupy a significant place,” the Serbian Ministry of Defense announced.

The aforementioned drones were developed this year and have begun to be equipped with them by the Serbian Army units.

The ‘Komarac 1’ suicide drone was originally made with a warhead made of slag, but this warhead was later modified to have both cumulative and fragmentation effects so that it could act not only against armored vehicles, but also against manpower.

The “Komarac 2” drone has a significantly larger head and can cause damage to heavily armored vehicles and assets, the researcher said, adding that a significant number of selected members of the Serbian Armed Forces have undergone training to operate this modern drone, which requires special skills.

Maneuvering capabilities allow the drone to be used in various conditions, from various rural to urban environments.

“Komarac 1” type drones are armed with an anti-armor cumulative-fragmentation warhead of 50 mm caliber and are intended for action against armored vehicles, easily established targets and manpower. The drone is guided to the target remotely, and the warhead can be activated upon impact with the target or directed via the control station.

“Komarac 2” drones are armed with a warhead with an explosively formed projectile of 105 mm caliber. The warhead acts with its projectile on the armored target, piercing it, and after that, parts of the projectile and the pierced armor act inside the target with a simultaneous increase in air pressure.
