Today, Slovenia marks Independence and Unity Day, commemorating the events of 1990, when the Slovenian parliament announced the results of a plebiscite in which 88.5 percent of all eligible voters voted for secession from the then Yugoslavia.

The plebiscite itself was held on December 23, 1990, with the agreement of the opposition and the then ruling coalition Demos.

The results were officially announced three days later in the parliament, which marked the beginning of preparations for the declaration of Slovenia’s independence, and this process was completed on June 25, 1991.

Most of the festivities in honor of the national holiday, which is celebrated as a non-working day, were held in the previous days, including the central celebration last Friday at Ljubljana’s “Cankarjev Dom”.

In honor of the national holiday, the Presidential Palace in Ljubljana will be open to all guests from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today, and a guard of honor of the Slovenian Army will be lined up in front of the building. The guests will be welcomed by the current President of Slovenia, Nataša Pirc Musar.
