Spain Refuses to Join Trump’s Peace Committee

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez declared on Friday, January 23, that Spain will not join Trump’s Peace Committee.

“We greatly appreciate the invitation, but we reject it. The main reason for this decision is consistency”, Sánchez explained after the EU summit in Brussels.

Sánchez pointed out that this decision is in line with the multilateral order, the United Nations system, and international law.

The Prime Minister also commented on the fact that the Palestinian Authority was not invited to join the Committee.

It should be recalled that U.S. President Donald Trump launched the Committee on Thursday, January 22, at the World EconomicForum (WEF) in Davos.

He invited around 60 governments to join him, but only a small number of Western allies accepted the invitation. The only EU member states who accepted the invite were Hungary and Bulgaria. In addition, Argentina, Israel and Saudi Arabia also joined.

Russia and China were also invited, but they refused to join.

The Committee was envisaged as an administrative body that would monitor the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip following Israel’s genocide against Palestinians.

Trump also confirmed that the Committee could be expanded to address other situations beyond Gaza.
