Cardiologist, writer and fighter for human rights, Svetlana Broz died on Saturday in Belgrade at the age of 70, her family announced.
Broz was the author of several books, including “Good People in the Time of Evil”, which was published in seven editions and translated into six world languages. She also published the books “The Righteous of Rwanda between Oblivion and Reconciliation”, “Galaxy Gojer” and “Moji”, and was also the co-author of numerous publications in the field of peace studies.
Since 2000, she has lived in Sarajevo where she founded and led the non-governmental organization Gariwo Sarajevo, promoting systematic education on civic courage, organizing public lectures, the School of Civic Courage and publishing activities with more than 60 published books. She also founded the Duško Kondor award for civic courage, about whose winners she made more than 40 documentaries.
She taught at 52 universities in the United States and 80 in Europe. For her humanitarian work during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, she was declared an honorary citizen of Tuzla. She also wore the French National Order of Merit, the Gold Ribbon for Education Margherita Zoebeli of Italy, and in Milan she earned the title of Righteous in the World Park of the Righteous.
Svetlana Broz was also known to the general public as the granddaughter of the lifelong Yugoslav president Josip Broz Tito.
Her daughter announced that the cremation will take place on March 26 at the New Cemetery in Belgrade.
