Team of 13 BiH Mountaineers Climbed Elbrus-The Highest Peak In Europe

A team of 13 mountaineers, organized by the Mountaineering Club Gorstaci from Sarajevo, set off on July 10th to Russia, to the Caucasus, to climb the highest peak of the European continent – Elbrus (5.642 m). The team stayed for four days at a camp at 3.800 m.a.s.l., waiting for the best conditions for the ascent. As stated by the Mountaineering Association of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBiH), it was a game of nerves, but it paid off – during the night of July 17th to 18th, they set off, and in the morning, in ideal weather, 12 out of the 13 participants reached the summit.

“Joy, happiness, even a few tears… we succeeded, on the second attempt, but we climbed it. It’s not easy to set out twice and go to distant Russia, thousands of kilometers,” say the participants of this expedition.

Out of the 13 participants, for five it was a second attempt because in 2024 they had to give up due to extremely bad weather, even though they were very close to the summit, at 5.300 m.a.s.l.

Elbrus is not a technically demanding climb, but it is an unpredictable mountain, known for frequent and rapid changes in weather. It is not uncommon for a sunny, beautiful day to quickly turn into a storm with strong winds and cold, so good equipment is mandatory for the climb, states the Mountaineering Association of FBiH, along with congratulations to all participants for the ascent, comradeship, togetherness, and good energy.
