By laying flowers and paying tribute at the site of the massacre, family members, representatives of associations, cantonal, city and municipal authorities marked the 33rd anniversary of the murder of eight fellow citizens at Halači Street at number 5.
Dženan Aljević, Mahir Ferhatović, Tarik Harba, Esma Muratović, Meliha Muratović – Spahić, Almasa Spahić, Mahira Spahić and Ismet Suljić were killed by members of the Army of Republika Srpska, who fired a grenade on this day in 1992, the explosive effect of which killed fellow citizens who were standing in line for water.
In that massacre, six more civilians from Sarajevo were seriously and slightly injured.
On behalf of the Sarajevo Canton, the anniversary was marked by the representative of the Sarajevo Canton Assembly, Jasmin Šaljić, and the representative of the Ministry of Communal Economy, Infrastructure, Spatial Planning, Construction and Environmental Protection of the Canton Kenan Dinar.
“Today we remember those killed at this place, but also all those killed in Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina. We are talking about them because it is extremely important, not only for the past and present, but especially for the future. By marking this sad day, we are not only paying tribute to our murdered fellow citizens, but we are sending a message that we will not forget. Places of remembrance, and today we are at one of them, are not only reminders of suffering and suffering, but also warnings for the future. It is a simple warning – to do everything we can to never allow such crimes to happen again,” said Dinar.
He recalled that Sarajevo survived the longest war of modern times, the attacks of the Army of Republika Srpska, which did not discriminate in killing. Everyone was a target, regardless of age, gender, religion or nationality.
“In the longest siege of our city in modern history, more than 12,000 people were killed, including 1,601 children. These are huge numbers that we must not pronounce lightly, because each of them represents a name, a face, a story and the immense sorrow of the families. Justice is our debt to the victims. International courts have convicted only a small number of those responsible for the crimes committed in Sarajevo – Stanislav Galić, Dragomir Milošević and Ratko Mladić. The verdicts are important, but they are not enough in themselves. Justice is not only in punishments, justice is also in recognizing the truth, in the fight against denial and in our unwavering determination to teach new generations about these events,” said Dinar, concluding that the denial of such crimes not only denies the past, it sabotages the future.
Therefore, we must insist on the truth, because only with the truth can trust be built, and trust is the foundation of every life together, was the message from today’s marking of the sad anniversary, the Protocol and Press Service of the Sarajevo Canton announced.
