The final competition of the U.S. Spelling Bee to be held

spellingbeeThe final competition of the U.S. Embassy’s Countrywide English-language Spelling Bee will take place at Sarajevo’s Kamerni Teatar on Saturday, May 9 at 14:00.  U.S. Ambassador to BiH Maureen Cormack will open the competition, where 18 finalists from across BiH will compete for prizes and the honor of being Bosnia and Herzegovina’s “best English-language Speller.”

The project began with 4,700 students at 126 schools competing in classroom-level contests in January 2015.  The winners of these contests faced each other in regional finals at the nine American Corners throughout BiH in April 2015.  Regional winners, their parents, and their teachers will travel to Sarajevo for the final competition where participants will compete for prizes, including a camera, IPod and an Apple I-Pad.

Finalists in this year’s competition come from Banja Luka, Bihać, Velika Kladuša, Šamac, Brčko, Gračanica, Tuzla, Lukavac,  Maglaj, Čitluk, Bugojno, Sarajevo, Trebinje,  Zenica.

“Spelling Bees” test students’ skills in spelling words in English.  Because the English language does not follow consistent spelling rules – unlike B/C/S – the words can be famously difficult to spell.  These spelling contests are held in schools across the United States to help students learn the language, improve spelling and increase vocabulary, but also because they are fun for students and the audience.
