The First Electric Tram Returns To Sarajevo’s Tracks after Decades

The first electric tram is back on the tracks of Sarajevo. More precisely, by decision of the Government of Canton Sarajevo (CS), a new line has been established with the first electric tram: Railway Station – Bascarsija.

“The Ministry of Transport of CS and Public Utility Company GRAS have succeeded in their goals to have the first electric tram ready for the seasonal line, and after test runs in recent days, it will begin operating as of today. The tram is one of Sarajevo’s symbols. We have received many requests for this tram from citizens and tourist agencies of our city. The ride will be an authentic experience, and I believe everyone will be satisfied. The goal was to make it operational and ready for service while maintaining its authenticity. Most importantly, we have brought the tram back to the tracks, and I have no doubt there will be more and more suggestions and ideas for its content and appearance, which makes me happy,” said the competent minister, Adnan Steta.

He recalls that in 1895, Sarajevo got electric lighting and that at the same time, the first electric tram began operating, replacing the previous horse-drawn tram that had started running in Sarajevo 140 years ago.

TRAM 1895 will run on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., and on weekends from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

“The return of the first tram to the streets of our city will bring a new dimension to the tourist offer, as the route it will take offers a rich historical and cultural display of the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). The price of a ride on this tram is 10 BAM for adults and five BAM for children. The operator will, in cooperation with agencies, thoroughly plan and arrange tourist tours,” said Steta, Klix.ba writes.
