The Former US General Arrives in Bosnia and Herzegovina: Who Is Ronald Johnson, a New US Ambassador?

The Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina has granted its consent to Ronald Johnson, whom U.S. President Donald Trump nominated as the new U.S. Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

With the agreement, Bosnia and Herzegovina gave its consent for his appointment as the Head of the U.S. diplomatic mission. Johnson’s official appointment still depends on completing the procedure in the United States.

Johnson is a retired brigadier general in the U.S. Marine Corps and a national security expert, with a decades-long military career behind him. If his appointment is confirmed in the final procedure, he will succeed the US Ambassador Michael Murphy in Sarajevo.

From Marine to Brigadier General

Ronald J. Johnson was born in Duxbury, the state of Massachusetts. He holds a management degree from Franklin Pierce College in New Hampshire, and he completed the Amphibious Warfare School, the Marine Corps Command and Staff College, and the Naval War College.

He began his military career in the 1980s, when he was assigned to the 2nd Marine Regiment. Over the next decades, he performed numerous command and staff duties, and spent part of his career in international missions.

He served as a United Nations military observer in Lebanon and Sinai, and participated in US forces operations in Southwest Asia, including “Desert Shield” and “Desert Storm.”

He Commanded a Marine Expeditionary Unit

One of the most significant functions in his military career was commanding the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, a position he held from 2003 to 2007.

During that period, he participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom and was involved in the evacuation of U.S. citizens from Beirut in 2006.

Following that period, he held senior positions in the Plans, Policies, and Operations Department of the U.S. Marine Corps.

He was awarded numerous decorations for his service, including the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and other military honors.

No Diplomatic Experience in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Johnson doesn’t have previous diplomatic experience in Bosnia and Herzegovina, nor in the Western Balkan countries.

Following his retirement from military service more than 15 years ago, he works as a consultant. He heads the Mares Associates LLC Company, which, according to his official biography, specializes in international security cooperation, modernization of defense, and strategic consulting.

His nomination for the US Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina was submitted to the US Senate on June 1, 2026.

According to the Senate’s available data, the nomination is being processed before the Committee on Foreign Relations. In late July, the Committee confirmed that Johnson meets the legal criteria regarding the competencies for performing the ambassador duty, but the nomination is yet to be finally confirmed.

Once the Senate finalizes the procedure and confirms the nomination, a formal appointment follows, as well as the arrival in Bosnia and Herzegovina and accreditation.

If the procedure is completed, Johnson will take over the duty of the US Ambassador in Sarajevo, in a country where he had no prior professional involvement.
