Iran’s ambassador to Lebanon, Mojtaba Amani, was injured by a pager explosion, the Iranian Mehr news agency reported.
A security source told Reuters that more than 1,000 people were injured by detonations of pagers used by members of the Hezbollah militant group to communicate.
Three sources confirmed that it was the latest model of the pager that Hezbollah had purchased during the previous months.
A Reuters reporter saw ambulances speeding through the southern suburbs of the capital, Beirut, where panic reigned.
Residents said that the explosions took place for a full 30 minutes.
A Reuters source said the devices also exploded in southern Lebanon.
