Italian police seized more than 130 million euros in a mafia raid, the authorities announced today.

The raid was aimed at branches of the Endranjeta and Camorro criminal organizations, mainly in Rome, which were involved in money laundering, authorities said.

A total of 18 suspects were detained. More than 50 others are under investigation. They are accused of money laundering, usury and extortion.

More than 500 police officers were involved in the operation in Rome and several other Italian cities.

The Endranjeta from Calabria and the Camorros from Naples, along with Cosa Nostra from Sicily, have been among the most powerful criminal groups in Italy for decades.

All three organizations have long operated far beyond their original areas, including overseas.

Endranjeta’s worldwide turnover is estimated at more than 50 billion euros per year, mainly through drug dealing, Hina writes.
