World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the level of destruction, death, displacement and disease in civil war-torn Sudan was “tragic”.

“The level of destruction, death, displacement and disease in Sudan is tragic,” Ghebreyesus said, adding that he participated in the delivery of medical supplies to Sudan three days ago at the Adra border crossing between Chad and Sudan.

“No amount of aid is enough to treat people in Sudan. They need peace,” added Ghebreyesus.

The Sudan War broke out in April 2023 between army general Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the commander of the paramilitary Rapid Support Force (RSF) Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo over a disagreement over the integration of the RSF into the Sudanese army.

Several ceasefire agreements brokered by Saudi Arabia and the United States (U.S.) brokers have failed to end the violence.

According to the United Nations (UN), more than 20,000 people have died, around 10 million have been displaced, and more than 25 million are in need of humanitarian aid as a result of the conflict in Sudan, where the world’s largest displacement and hunger crisis is taking place.
