Rich cultural and historical contents characterize the Una-Sana Canton, from medieval fortresses and stone walls of old towns to archaeological sites. Selma Hadžić represents a rich heritage that should be preserved from oblivion in Bihać, which is also the cultural center of this canton.
Cultural heritage is not only a trace of the past but a part of the identity of the people who live in this area. By preserving the heritage, the stories that shaped this part of our country are also preserved. One of them is the old towers that originate from the Middle Ages and many towns in the canton are recognizable by them.
Citizens say:
We have a large number of fortresses and cantonal captaincy, in almost all cities and municipalities.
The cultural wealth of the Una-Sana Canton and Bihać is extremely rich.
The legacy that remains should be preserved for the future.
There are about 50 old towns in the area of the canton, as well as many important cultural and historical monuments with various motifs and inscriptions. The goal is to preserve the heritage, which is an important part of the tourist offer.
“All this heritage, in fact, national monuments are under the jurisdiction of the Federation in accordance with the decisions of the Commission for the Preservation of National Monuments, we in principle depend on the funds we have, whether we get them through a grant or apply to some public call and we go for preservation,” explained Sabina Bišćević, expert associate for architectural heritage at the Institute for Cultural Heritage of the USK.
“In everything we do, we have cooperation with the tourism associations of cities and municipalities and with cultural centers to combine all activities with their offer,” points out Midhada Midžić, director of the Institute for Cultural Heritage of USK.
There are also important archeological sites in the area, on whose protection the Institute is working intensively.
“About 500 archaeological sites have been recorded on the territory of USK, with the fact that it was in 1988, so the Institute plans to do some prospecting of already known sites over time in order to see the real state of what we have,” emphasizes Dženefa Merdanić-Šahinović, expert associate for archaeological heritage at the Institute for Cultural Heritage of USK.
This year also saw the start of important projects for the restoration of national monuments and guardians of the heritage of the anti-fascist struggle. In the Institute, they particularly emphasize the renovation of the roof of the Old Town in Velika Kladuša and the construction of the building of the II session of ZAVNOBiH in Sanski Most, the restoration of which has been waiting for 30 years, Federalna writes.
