The US and Iran are expected to hold a second round of nuclear talks in Geneva today, according to US officials and sources, amid rising military tensions in the Gulf.

Officials quoted by the American website Axios said on Friday that unofficial adviser to the US president Jared Kushner and White House envoy Steve Witkoff from the US side are expected to participate in the negotiations, whose goal is to reach an agreement that could prevent escalation, while the Iranian delegation will be led by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi, who mediated between Washington and Tehran, will also participate.

Behind the scenes, a US official said Witkoff was relaying messages to Tehran via Oman earlier this week.

According to Iranian state television, Ali Larijani, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, confirmed that he had received the document containing the US proposals.
