The Value of Card Transactions last Year was 18.4 billion BAM

The Central Bank of Bosnia and Herzegovina (CBBiH) published its annual report on card operations in BiH for the year 2024.

At the end of 2024, the total number of active cards amounted to 2.585.419, an increase of 131.069 compared to 2023. A total of 21 banks in BiH issued cards to their clients.

The market is dominated by debit cards, with a share of 83.37 percent and a noticeable growth trend.

The value of card transactions is increasing, reaching 18.4 billion BAM in 2024, which is a growth of 13.76 percent compared to the previous year. There is a continuous upward trend in the value of card transactions year after year.

The total number of card transactions was 186 million, showing a growth trend. The average value of a single transaction was 99 BAM, which is 3 BAM lower than in 2023, while the average annual turnover per card was 7.127 BAM, an increase of 524 BAM compared to 2023.

There was an increase in card transactions at ATMs, POS terminals, and online. Of the total card transaction value, 68 percent was carried out at ATMs, 28 percent via POS terminals, and 4 percent online.

The percentage of online card transactions completed within the country was 36 percent, while 64 percent of the total online card transaction volume was conducted abroad.

The value of transactions abroad using cards issued by BiH banks increased by 34.34 percent in 2024 compared to 2023, reaching approximately 1 billion BAM. In the transaction structure, cash withdrawals at ATMs and POS terminals accounted for 31 percent, while purchases of goods and services at POS terminals accounted for 69 percent.

Compared to 2023, the value of transactions made with foreign cards in BiH banks and stores increased by 11.41 percent, reaching 3.7 billion BAM. In the transaction structure, cash withdrawals at ATMs and POS terminals accounted for 54 percent, while purchases of goods and services at POS terminals made up 46 percent.

Banks are continuously working on increasing the number of ATMs and/or POS terminals offered. In the past year, a total of 1.767 ATMs and 35.035 POS terminals were installed. Of the total number of installed POS terminals, 34.687 were installed in stores, while 348 were installed at bank counters.
