Citizens gathered today in Sarajevo in front of the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina on the occasion of the tragic tram accident, in which a 23-year-old student from Brčko, Erdoan Morankić, lost his life, and a 17-year-old student, E.J., was seriously injured.
However, the informal group of citizens “Say Enough”, which organized yesterday’s gathering, dissociated itself from today’s protests in Sarajevo.
The Police Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Sarajevo Canton, which ensures today’s protests, called on citizens to contribute to the preservation of public order and peace with their behavior.
Gathering in front of the National Museum
The participants of the protest gathered at 12:00 in front of the National Museum, not far from the intersection near the School of Mechanical Engineering, where the accident occurred on February 12.
After the gathering, the citizens headed towards the Eternal Fire, briefly stopped on the plateau in front of the BiH Institutions building, and then observed a minute’s silence in honor of the fallen young man Erdoan Morankić.
Traffic at the intersection near the SCC is currently blocked.
The accident occurred when a tram, which was moving from the direction of the Railway Station, entered the intersection near the Technical School at high speed, during which it derailed, hit the tram station and pedestrians.
Third in a series of peaceful protests
This is the third in a series of peaceful protests, and citizens are still carrying banners with messages of support for the seriously injured girl, as well as demands for the truth about how the accident occurred and the determination of responsibility, while at the same time calling for accountability for government representatives.
In addition, the gathered people today also expressed dissatisfaction with the increasingly frequent accidents, not only in Sarajevo, but throughout BiH, emphasizing that they do not feel safe.
Citizens are also demanding the exclusion of old trams from traffic, since in the accident that occurred, the driver was driving a tram that was several decades old.
As previously announced, the officers of the Police Department of the MUP of Sarajevo Canton arrested tram driver A. K. (1978) on suspicion of being responsible for a serious traffic accident.
The acting prosecutor of the Sarajevo Canton Prosecutor’s Office proposed to the Sarajevo Cantonal Court that the suspected tram driver be detained for one month.
On the occasion of this tragedy, yesterday, February 14, the Day of Mourning was declared in Sarajevo.
