On November 10th, 1973, the first Yugoslav-made “Beetle” rolled off the assembly line at the Sarajevo Automobile Factory (TAS) in Vogosca, near Sarajevo.

Beetles were produced in Yugoslavia from 1973 to 1976 on a CKD basis, with a total of 31.667 units made, including 1200J (29.112), 1300J (525), and 1303J (2.030) models.

The “J” suffix on the engine cover symbolizes Yugoslavia.

When the war in the former Yugoslavia ended in 1998, the factory was reestablished as Volkswagen Sarajevo.

However, car production no longer exists there today. Photos shared on social media reveal what Beetle production in Sarajevo looked like before the war.
