Thousands Protest Outside Belgrade’s Palace of Justice Demanding Release of Arrested Students

Several thousand students and citizens blocked traffic on Savska Street in downtown Belgrade tonight, in front of the Palace of Justice (Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office), due to the illegal arrest of several dozen students after yesterday’s large rally in the capital.

A Beta agency reporter reports that the number of people gathered continues to grow, and according to some estimates, there are already more than 10,000.

“We will not allow Serbia to become Belarus. Aleksandar Vučić has gone to war against his own people, to whom he delivered the following ultimatum on Vidovdan: either he will remain in power at all costs, without the support of the citizens – or there will be no Serbia,” Srđan Milivojević, president of the Democratic Party (DS), told the crowd.

“The will and desire of one man to rule without any control or restrictions cannot be stronger than the desire of millions of Serbian citizens to live in freedom. The Serbian Assad would probably want to escape, but he will have to serve time,” Milivojević added.

“I call on all politicians to stand by the students’ demands for elections and the rebelling citizens of Serbia without any reservations. Vučić must go,” said the DS president.

“I demand that all those arrested be immediately released, because the crimes they are allegedly accused of were invented in the mind of a man who has lost touch with reality. Release all innocent people, so that there is room in prison for those who brought Serbia to this situation, led by the greatest coward in the history of Serbia,” concluded Milivojević.

The deputy president of the People’s Movement of Serbia, Aleksandar Ivanović, also addressed the gathering:

“Today we are witnessing the impotence of the regime of Aleksandar Vučić, who promised to quell the civil rebellion back in March, and yesterday 150,000 people in Belgrade denied it. Now it is clear to him that, when we talk about the end, we can only talk about the end of the treacherous and harmful regime of the Serbian Progressive Party,” said Ivanović.

“In response to the endless columns of rebellious citizens on the streets of Belgrade, Vučić issued an arrest warrant for students – smart kids and the future of this country – whom he cannot force to live in his ‘Ćaćiland’,” added Ivanović.

“This protest by citizens in front of the VJT confirms that people are determined to go all the way in the fight against the mafia regime, and that they will not agree to live in the conditions of fear and terror that Vučić is trying to impose,” said Ivanović.

“We demand the release of all unjustly arrested students. The issue of solidarity is more important than ever before – we must all stand shoulder to shoulder in this fight for the liberation of Serbia,” concluded the vice president of the NPS.

After a brutal police intervention on Saturday evening, more than 80 students were arrested, of whom about 30 were detained, according to unofficial student information.

They are allegedly suspected of acting against the constitutional order and calling for a violent change in the constitutional order.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Security and Information Agency, on the orders of the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Belgrade, announced that they had arrested six people on suspicion of having committed the criminal offense of “Preparing an act against the constitutional order and security of Serbia” in connection with the offense of “Calling for a violent change in the constitutional order”.

The VJP announced that these are L.S. from Zaječar, I.M. from Smederevo, L.S. from Kragujevac, B.B. from Belgrade, N.P. from Sombor and D.D. from Niš, who are suspected of having, on June 20, 2025, at the premises of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, and on June 21, 2025, at the premises of the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Belgrade, among other things, arranged and prepared “an attack on state institutions, a blockade of roads and key infrastructure throughout the territory of the entire country, with the aim of violently changing the state order”, Beta writes.
