Three people were killed Wednesday in a shooting at a Catholic school in Minneapolis, including the gunman, and about 20 were injured, a Justice Department official said.

The shooting took place in the elementary school located within the Church of the Annunciation.

Among the injured, ten people are in a critical condition, the BBC reported with reference to the BBC.

The gunman died of self-inflicted wounds, authorities told CBS.

The gunman used a semi-automatic weapon, two federal law enforcement sources told CBS.

Sources said the shooting took place during a mass for students.

US Attorney General Pam Bondi said FBI agents were on the scene. “I am praying for everyone who witnessed this tragedy,” she posted on Instagram.

Homeland Security Secretary Christy Noem announced that the department is monitoring the situation and is in contact with local authorities.

Students returned to classes on Monday after the summer holidays.

The school is attended by children from preschool age to eighth grade.
