United States (U.S.) President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping spoke amid a deadlock in negotiations between the two countries over tariffs that have shaken global trade, Chinese state media reported.
The conversation on Thursday followed Trump’s suggestion that it is difficult to reach an agreement with Xi.
“I like President Xi of China, always have, and always will, but he is very tough, and extremely hard to make a deal with,” Trump posted on his social media page on Wednesday.
Trade negotiations between the U.S. and China stalled shortly after the two countries reached an agreement on May 12th to reduce tariff rates in order to hold talks. Behind the deadlock lies continued competition for economic advantage.
