US President Donald Trump said he could impose new sanctions on Russia if its President Vladimir Putin refuses to negotiate to end the war in Ukraine, Al Jazeera reports.

Trump did not provide details on possible additional sanctions, but recalled that the United States has already imposed “heavy sanctions” on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Tanjug reports, citing Reuters.

He also said his administration was considering sending weapons to Ukraine, stressing that the European Union should do more to support Ukraine.

“We are talking to (Ukrainian President Volodymyr) Zelensky, we will be talking to President Putin soon,” Trump said.

Trump also noted that in a phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping, he urged China to intervene to stop the war in Ukraine.

“He (Xi) has not done much on this issue. He is very powerful, and so are we. I told him: ‘You should solve this’. We talked about it,” said Trump.
