US President-elect Donald Trump will issue executive orders upon taking office that will cut diversity, equality and inclusion programs and declare that the US federal government will recognize two genders, male and female, a new White House official announced.
The official added that more moves on DEI, as diversity and inclusion programs are often called, are expected soon, but did not reveal details about the planned steps or when they would be announced. As part of the executive orders, federal funds will not be used to promote “gender ideology,” the official said, a term often used to refer to any ideology that promotes non-traditional views of sex and gender.
US funds will not be used for medical gender reassignment procedures, the official explained. It was not immediately clear what the executive orders would mean for the US military.
Trump announced during his first term that he would ban transgender soldiers from serving in the military, and his administration has frozen the hiring of transgender personnel. Biden reversed that decision when he took office in 2021.
The two executive orders on DEI and gender were part of a stampede of orders on topics ranging from immigration to energy that were being announced this morning by new White House officials. Trump was sworn in at 6 p.m. Central European Time.
