Tunnel Between Morocco and Spain Discovered in Major Drug Smuggling Operation

Spanish authorities have discovered a drug smuggling tunnel connecting Morocco to the Spanish territory of Ceuta in North Africa.

The tunnel, which was uncovered during an operation to combat hashish trafficking, was illuminated and located 12 meters underground, police reported.

It was found during a search of a warehouse in an industrial area of Ceuta.

Spanish media reported that the tunnel stretched 50 meters on the Spanish side and that its exit was found in a former marble factory that was closed in 2020.

“The narrow tunnel could have been used to transport drugs across the border between Morocco and Spain,” the Civil Guard stated.

No one has been arrested in connection with the tunnel, and no drugs were found at the site. Police stated that several people have been detained in recent weeks, including two members of the Civil Guard, as part of a broader crackdown on drug traffickers, during which more than 6.000 kilograms of hashish hidden in trucks were seized.

Ceuta and Melilla, another small Spanish enclave in North Africa, form Europe’s only land border with Africa. Earlier this year, Spain and Morocco opened customs facilities in Ceuta and Melilla to allow for the transfer of goods between the two countries at the land border.
