Two people were killed, nine were injured and three were missing after an explosion at a fuel storage facility of petrochemical company Eni near Florence, Tuscany Governor Eugenio Giani said on Monday.
“The rescue and relief operation is still ongoing,” Florence authorities announced after convening a meeting of the emergency rescue unit.
The explosion took place in the fuel warehouse, the company Eni announced.
“Eni confirms that a fire broke out this morning at a fuel storage facility in Calenzano (Florence) and that firefighters are working to extinguish the flames, which are confined to the loading area and are not affecting the fuel tanks in any way.”
“The effects and causes of the event are still being determined. We will provide more information later,” said Eni.
Florence authorities told people within five kilometers of the explosion to keep their windows closed.
