As part of the International Day of Remembrance and Commemoration of the Genocide in Srebrenica 1995, from July 17 to August 28, 2026, two exhibitions were jointly set up at the United Nations Headquarters in New York: “From Words to Violence: Lives Behind the Fields of Death” and “Legacy of Hope after the Genocide in Srebrenica 1995: The Journey of a New Generation”.

The exhibitions were premiered at the headquarters of the United Nations in 2025 on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica.

In addition to the official program of this year’s commemoration in the United Nations General Assembly, the Permanent Mission of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the United Nations presented the UN Outreach Program with both exhibitions, the author of which was the Srebrenica Memorial Center, and this enabled the Outreach Program to use them in its future international exhibition and educational activities in order to preserve the memory of the genocide in Srebrenica and raise awareness of its consequences.

Both exhibitions are presented together in the Visitors’ Lobby, the busiest area of the United Nations headquarters, through which a large number of visitors and delegations of Member States pass every day. Their joint presentation presents the complete story of the genocide in Srebrenica, its devastation, consequences and the legacy that is being passed on to new generations.

The exhibition “From Words to Violence: Lives beyond the Fields of Death” provides an insight into the genocide against Bosniaks committed in Srebrenica in July 1995. Photographs of everyday objects depict lives lived and lost, families torn apart, and the consequences of hate speech and indifference to hate.

The exhibition also includes testimonies from eight young people who were children in 1995 or were born after the genocide. Their stories and photographs testify to human resilience and the transformative power of love in the midst of unimaginable loss. They illuminate a new generation that preserves memory and cultivates a culture of compassion and peace.

The exhibition “Legacy of Hope after the Srebrenica Genocide of 1995: The Journey of a New Generation” features eight personal stories told through photographs and quotes from young people who survived the 1995 Srebrenica genocide as children or were born after it.

Each story is a testament to human strength and the transformative power of love in the face of unimaginable loss. The exhibition illuminates the lives of members of a new generation, who are beacons of hope and foster a culture of remembrance, compassion and peace.

Both exhibitions are open to the public from July 17 to August 28, 2026.
