Two Kidney Transplants were performed at Sarajevo University Clinical Center

At the Nephrology Clinic of the Clinical Center of the University of Sarajevo (KCUS), two kidney transplants were successfully performed on dialysis patients. According to Prof. Dr. Damir Rebic, head of the Clinic for Nephrology, it is about two living related kidney transplants.

”Patients and donors are stable, postoperative recovery is progressing smoothly. We thank the donors for their generous gesture because now patients, after many years of dialysis treatment, continue their lives with a new, functional kidney.

Sarajevo University Clinical Center has teams, equipment and state-of-the-art conditions for kidney transplantation. The problem is that we do not have a large number of donors, that is, a large number of cadaveric transplants. This must be urgently addressed, at the level of the entire country, if we want to achieve better results and be recognized by large organizations such as Eurotransplant. The example of the doctors of the Zenica Medical Center is a bright spot, which we should all follow, in terms of finding potential cadavers, especially large clinical centers such as Sarajevo University Clinical CenterTuzla and University Clinical Hospital of Mostar (SKB)Mostar,” said prof. Dr. Rebic.

As Prof. Dr. Hajrija Maksic, acting general director of Sarajevo University Clinical Center said, Sarajevo University Clinical Center is actively working on improving the transplant program, and this is the seventh transplant that has been carried out since the beginning of this year (of which three were cadaveric).

”All relevant institutions should launch campaigns about the importance of organ donation. It is important that BiH joins the Eurotransplant program as soon as possible because in this way the number of patients who are relocated outside the borders of our country would be reduced. I would like to mention that Sarajevo University Clinical Center has expert medical multidisciplinary teams, which can realize complex transplant requests, during 24 hours,” said prof. Dr. Maksic.

She noted that the Sarajevo University Clinical Center kidney transplant program continues, with planned elective livingrelated and unrelated transplants, as well as 24-hour readiness for a potential cadaveric kidney transplant, Sarajevo University Clinical Center announced.
