Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Denis Bećirović and member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Željko Komšić attended a working lunch with the ambassadors of the member states and officials of the United Nations, and they discussed the importance of adopting the resolution on July 11 as an international day of remembrance and commemoration of the genocide in Srebrenica committed in 1995.

The meeting was also attended by BiH Ambassador to the UN Zlatko Lagumdžija.

Bećirović and Komšić emphasized the importance of international solidarity in dealing with the past in order to ensure that evil like the one in Srebrenica never happens again.

“Our obligation to the victims, their families and future generations is a civilizational one, and together we must fight against forgetting and denial,” said the Chairman of the BiH Presidency, Denis Bećirović.

By denying the genocide committed against Bosniaks in and around Srebrenica, as well as by glorifying legally convicted war criminals, Bećirović and Komšić stated, the survivors of the genocide are exposed to attacks on their dignity on a daily basis.

“By adopting this resolution, we would also provide support to the mothers of Srebrenica in the fight for truth and justice. Also, the resolution would help the process of reconciliation within Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as the region,” said Bećirović and Komšić.

They also emphasized the global importance of genocide prevention, and the importance of studying genocide in the education of children and youth.

Through education about Srebrenica, young people acquire the ability to recognize and deal with genocide, and actively engage in preventing genocide in the future. The integration of this topic into the education system provides the foundations for building a society based on respect for diversity, justice and reconciliation, thus contributing to the long-term preservation of peace and stability in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region, announced the Cabinet of the Chairman of the BiH Presidency, Denis Bećirović.
