In Gradačac, citizens peacefully gathered to mark the anniversary of the murder of Nizama Hećimović.

She was killed by her husband Nermin Sulejmanović, and the physical violence was broadcast live on social media. He killed two other people and injured three.

The murder of Nizama Hećimović highlighted the weakness of the system when it comes to protecting women.

The peaceful gathering was organized by Nizama’s aunt Zijada Pamuković, to thank all the citizens who supported her efforts in the fight for justice for every abused woman.

“We came to send a message that what happened should never happen again, to any woman, mother, girl…”, said Pamuković.

Those gathered said that there is no progress in protecting women, that violence continues to occur, and that nothing is being done to combat it.
