United States (U.S.) President Joe Biden’s special envoy for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, will come to an official visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) on Sunday.
The long-awaited visit of Escobar will take place later this week and early next week. During his stay in our country, this U.S.official will hold numerous talks with political leaders in BiH.
This visit is expected after the session of the United Nations (UN) Security Council on the situation in BiH, which was held yesterday.
Many expect him to come up with concrete solutions to the current political crisis, that is, to create a process of unblocking institutions and prevent the collapse of the BiH institutions.
The U.S. President’s Special Envoy for the Western Balkans arrives at a time of deep political crisis in BiH, and recently he noted that BiH Presidency member Milorad Dodik’s moves were illegal and destabilizing, and called on BiH political leaders not to respond to his rhetoric and further worsen the situation.
Speaking about the next moves of the international community, he explained that there is a possibility of sanctions and that all tools are ready if someone starts to further endanger the territorial integrity of BiH.
Further, while speaking about possible sanctions, he stressed that they can be directed against individuals, but that there is still room for dialogue. He said that the BiH entities don’t have the constitutional authority to unilaterally withdraw from state institutions.
He reminded that the U.S. provided over 2.4 billion dollars of aid to the region in the past decade, and in the fiscal year 2021 alone, over 145 million dollars were set aside to help the Western Balkans on its European path. It is a clear signal that the U.S. will not allow the destabilization of BiH or the entire region.
