Ukraine Strikes Over 40 Bombers at Russian Air Bases in Bold Cross-Border Attack

The Ukrainian army carried out a large-scale attack on Russia, and state media reported on Sunday that nearly 40 strategic bombers were destroyed in a drone attack in various regions, including the Siberian region of Irkutsk, which is over 4.000 kilometers away from the Ukrainian-Russian border.

“The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) carried out a major special operation to destroy Russian bombers,” Ukrainian state media reported.

The report states that SBU drones targeted planes overnight which Moscow had used in attacks on Ukrainian cities.

“It is currently known that more than 40 bombers were hit,” the report states, adding that preparations for the operation lasted more than a year and a half.

The attack simultaneously targeted four airfields, including Olenya, Ivanovo, Dyagilevo, and Belaya, the last of which is located in Russia’s Siberian region of Irkutsk, whose administrative center is more than 4.300 kilometers away from the Russian-Ukrainian border.

The governor of Irkutsk, Igor Kobzev, confirmed the attacks on the region on Telegram, saying that a military unit in the settlement of Sredniy was attacked by drones.

“The source from which the drones were launched has already been blocked. It was a truck,” he added.

The governor of Murmansk, Andrey Chibis, and the governor of Ryazan, Pavel Malkov, also reported drone attacks in their regions. However, the former called the information about explosions in the city of Severomorsk false.

The city serves as the main naval base for Russia’s Northern Fleet.

The SBU has not yet given an official comment on the reports.
