Authorities in the United States of America are seeking the extradition of Mevlid Jašarević from Bosnia and Herzegovina over the 2011 terrorist attack on the US Embassy in Sarajevo.
As Radio Free Europe reported, US authorities requested Jašarević’s extradition following an indictment for the attempted murder of US officials during the attack.
The extradition request was issued a day before the expiration of his 15-year prison sentence, which the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina handed down for the embassy attack.
The indictment against Jašarević was issued in the US in 2012, charging him with attempted murder of US officers, assault on US officers and employees with a deadly weapon, destruction of property, and firearm-related offenses.
Back when judicial institutions in Bosnia and Herzegovina raised the indictment that led to his 15-year sentence, US authorities fully supported the process.
However, in a separate first-instance ruling, the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina acquitted Jašarević of recent prison-related charges, a decision the Prosecutor’s Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina still retains the right to appeal.
