US State Department Special Envoy for the Balkans to visit Sarajevo tomorrow

US State Department Special Envoy for the Balkans and US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Matthew Palmer is arriving to visit Sarajevo, Dnevni Avaz has learned.

Palmer will arrive in Bosnia and Herzegovina from Brussels, where he has held talks with European officials, but also with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic.

As confirmed to Avaz from several sources, Palmer will have several important political meetings in Sarajevo, including talks with political leaders and members of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

On Wednesday, Trump’s special envoy will meet with three prime ministers: Zoran Tegeltija, the chairman of the BiH Council of Ministers, Fadil Novalic, the prime minister of the Federation of BiH, and Radovan Viskovic, the prime minister of Republika Srpska.

In addition, Palmer is expected to have more direct contacts with key political actors, especially after significant events throughout the region.

This is especially true of the historic agreement signed in the White House between Serbian President Vučić and Kosovo Prime Minister Avdulah Hoti. The precise position of the USA is known, that there is no connection between the situation in BiH and the status of Kosovo, but that does not mean that the normalization of relations between Belgrade and Pristina does not contribute to the stabilization of the whole Balkans.

Palmer is a key interlocutor from Washington for BiH and his arrival means the continuation of active US policy to support reforms and the country’s progress on the European path and the path to membership in the North Atlantic Alliance.

Also, Palmer is expected to BH authorities to discuss economic issues, in particular the fight against the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic. Also, it is not excluded that constitutional changes will be discussed, considering that it is approaching exactly 25 years since the signing of the Dayton Peace Agreement, writes Avaz.
