The US State Department will lay off 1,107 civil servants and 246 foreign service employees as part of a major reorganization of the work, the AP reported, citing an unnamed senior US official.
The report states that the foreign service employees will initially be on administrative leave for 120 days, after which they will be officially laid off.
State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce confirmed media reports yesterday regarding the intention of the US President Donald Trump administration to drastically reduce the number of employees as part of the reorganization.
She stressed that the decision was not made for anything related to employees, but rather to ensure that the State Department continues to work relevantly and effectively.
