[wzslider]Already toward the end of the renovation of Sarajevo’s Vijećnica, a “jewel” of architecture done in pseudo- Moorish style, lifted from the ashes in all its glory, confirming its leading position in B&H and abroad by the beauty of its design and decoration, leaves no room for competition. The building is almost done, although the fourth phase of reconstruction is still in progress. The completions date is 4 July.
The beauty of the painted decorations on the walls and ceilings amaze every visitor. The central hall surrounded by stone pillars is decorated with glass mosaic on the ceiling, while the ceremonial hall planned for sessions of the City Council is painted in a whole range of colors, with gold color edges.
Media representatives were informed today on the course of the work during a collective tour in the facility. This visit was also attended by representatives of the supervisory team of Safege company, contractors Unigradnja and other professional personnel, as well as representatives of the EU delegation in B&H.
Spokesperson of EU delegation in B&H Andy McGuffie pointed out that the protection and preservation of the cultural heritage in B&H is of great importance for the EU. The reconstruction of Vijećnica is just one project in a series of actions and projects implemented by the EU in this area. He stated that the EU has contributed with around nine million BAM during the four reconstruction phases of Vijećnica since 2000.
“According to the original contract, the completion of works are scheduled in July, but considering the pace of works, we might say that the completion of reconstruction might be possible by the end of May. Considering the importance of this project, we need to be absolutely sure that the building is safe and available for use in the following decades”, he said.
The architect Muhamed Hamidović, who leads the supervising teams underlined that it was very complicated to try to make a copy of the building as it looked in the late 19th century. He states that they faced many challenges that have emerged after removing certain sections and cleaning what was left after the fire.
“Comparing with previous projects of colleagues, we came to the conclusion that some things need to be corrected. There were problems with certain color decorations, but I think we got what we offer as our vision and arranging of cultural heritage”, he said.
