berlin2At the invitation of the German Federal Government, on August 28, Berlin hosted a conference on the Western Balkans, and Chancellor Angela Merkel, Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel with the heads of government, foreign ministers and ministers of economy of the countries in the region discussed regional cooperation on the path to EU integration.

A spokesman for the German Embassy in Sarajevo, Jens Wagner said on this occasion that their most important goal is Bosnia and Herzegovina’s membership in the European Union.

He added that Bosnia and Herzegovina has to solve a lot of problems on the path to the EU, especially the difficult economic conditions and high unemployment rate, and that similar problems exist in neighboring countries, and that the basic idea of the Berlin Conference is that the Western Balkan countries can better address these problems together.

Wagner as an example mentioned that in the field of transportation or energy, for Bosnia and Herzegovina it pays off to have close cooperation with neighboring countries, Serbia, Montenegro and Croatia.

“Close regional cooperation on the path to EU integration is something we want to support in Berlin. I hope that the heads of governments and ministers from the region tomorrow in Berlin will decide on specific projects so as to enable progress in their countries,” said Wagner, stated the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in BiH.
