war memoriesThe record of 3,777 shells fired at Sarajevo, in one day, was filed on the 22nd of July 1993. These shells made tremendous damage and civil, cultural and religious object were damaged the most.

People were killed, civil, cultural and religious buildings were destroyed, even hospitals! During the siege of Sarajevo, on average, a total of 329 shells would hit Sarajevo on a daily basis.

Eldina Zolj-Balenovic, journalist for Oslobodjenje, which is on medical leave for half a year due to her illness, presented touching review of this historical time.

“One of my colleagues wrote a status saying that on this day, a total of 3,777 shells were fired on Sarajevo. I am thinking and I remembered, the day before just a few shells less, the day after a few more, and it was going like that for 4 years.”

“On every buzzing of these shells and the sound of detonations children were shaking, looking for their mothers, brothers and sisters, to make sure that they are still alive. Their thoughts were with their fathers and brothers in trenches, and they were praying to God in tears that the shell bypassed their trench this time.”

“At the same time, between two detonations, we were thinking how to get water or wood, do a paperwork or homework, because we still had to go to school. The resistance must be given, everyone in their own way. And we, children, certainly provided resistance. We played like it was the most peaceful time ever, we went sledding, went to bring drinking water, collect radicchio for our mothers to make a salad, coltsfoot for cabbage rolls, we were “catching” the rainwater in order to wash the laundry…”
