In Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBiH), there is a strong disparity in the development of cantons, municipalities and cities. This is particularly visible in the document “Socio-economic indicators by municipalities of FBiH 2021.” Federal Institute for Development Planning.

Three municipalities in Herzegovina belong to the category of highly developed local self-government units, namely the cities of Mostar and Siroki Brijeg and the municipality of Citluk, writes Vecernji list.

”The development index indicates that the cluster of highly developed local self-government units is linked to the capital of BiH, Sarajevo. The first group according to the development index consists of Center Sarajevo, Novo Sarajevo, Stari Grad and Novi Grad, as well as Ilidza, Trnovo and Vogosca. The second group consists mostly of local self-government units that are the capitals of cantons, i.e. the cities of Tuzla, Mostar, Siroki Brijeg, Gorazde, Bihac and Zenica. Doboj-Jug, Tesanj, Hadzici, Citluk and Ilijas are also in this group,” the document states.

According to the level of development of the FBiH according to local self-government units in 2021, the 5th group (significantly underdeveloped municipalities) includes: Ravno, Vares, Domaljevac-Samac, Kljuc, Buzim, Drvar, Glamoc, Celic, Teocak, Pale, Sapna, Bosansko Grahovo and Dobretici.

The 4th group (underdeveloped municipalities) includes: City of Livno, Fojnica, Olovo, City of Zavidovici, Foca, Kalesija, City of Stolac, City of Bosanska Krupa, City of Cazin, Tomislavgrad, Gornji Vakuf-Uskoplje, Velika Kladusa, Prozor, Odzak, Sanski Most, Kladanj and Bosanski Petrovac.

The 3rd group includes: Grude, Vitez, City of Visoko, Banovici, Kresevo, City of Gracanica, Posusje, Neum, Kiseljak, Kakanj, City of Zivinice, Usora, City of Lukavac, Jablanica, Kupres, Travnik, City of Gradacac, City of Ljubuski, City of Konjic, Novi Travnik, City of Capljina, Zepce, Bugojno, Maglaj, Doboj-Istok, City of Srebrenik, Donji Vakuf, Busovaca, City of Orasje, Breza, and Jajce.

In the ranking of cantons in 2021 compared to 2020, it was noted that Bosnian-Podrinje Canton (BPC) Gorazde and Herzegovina-Neretva Canton (HNC) switched places. BPCadvanced by one place and is now in third place, while HNC fell by one place and is now in fourth place.

Zenica-Doboj Canton (ZDC) and Tuzla also switched places, so now ZDC is in fifth place, Tuzla Canton (TC) in sixth place.
