Who will be the Ambassadors of BiH to the UN and the UK?

Decisions about Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) that will be made in the United States (U.S.), as well as in the headquarters of the United Nations (UN), could be more significant than those that will be made in the European Union (EU). That is why it is very important who will be the ambassador to the UN.

How important this is was shown by the last session of the UN Security Council, where the report of the High Representative Christian Schmidt on the political and economic situation in BiH in the last six months was discussed.

The five permanent members of the UN Security Council (the U.S., the United Kingdom (UK), France, Russia, and China) decide on some of the key issues related to BiH, among which are the activities of the Office of the High Representative (OHR) and EUFOR.

According to information, it is likely that the member of the Presidency of BiH, Denis Becirovic (SDP), will decide who will be the ambassador to the UN, whose seat is in New York.

It should also be up to Becirovic to have a personnel solution for the ambassador of BiH in London. So, it is likely that he will appoint an ambassador to the UK, which is also very important for BiH.

Both the U.S. and the UK supported Schmidt’s decision in the UN to impose changes to the Electoral Law on the night of the General Elections that relate to the election of delegates to the House of Peoples of the Parliament of the Federation of BiH (FBiH), despite opposition in part of the country. This is partly a consequence of the insufficient diplomatic engagement of BiH.

When the OHR will be closed and when the EUFOR mission will end will largely depend on what will happen in New York, that is, on the position of the U.S. and the UK in the UN Security Council. Their views will also be important in further amendments to the Electoral Law that relate to the election of members of the Presidency. How much BiH will influence the U.S.’s and UK’s views will depend on who will be its diplomatic representatives, so Becirovic has a great responsibility.

Moreover, according to the information, the BiH ambassador in Washington should be someone from the rank of Croatian people in BiH, while the ambassador in Brussels should be someone from the rank of Serbian people in BiH. The final decision on the ambassadors will be made by the members of the Presidency with mutual consultation, Klix.ba reports.
