Will BiH face a Shortage of Milk?

Milk production in our country is in continuous decline, due to high costs and low purchase price.

However, the situation was further complicated this summer by extreme temperatures, which caused cows on farms to produce less milk. In addition, farmers expect a lack of food due to the poor corn yield. Will this lead to an increase in the price of milk?

Despite constant cooling and adapted nutrition due to high temperatures, the daily production of milk on the farm of the agricultural estate “Semberija” dropped from almost 10,000 to 8,000 liters.

Producers point out that high temperatures have further complicated the already difficult situation in the dairy industry. This year’s poor corn crop is another in a series of blows.

MIKO RIKANOVIĆ, agricultural producer

“The problem will be to feed the livestock, and the livestock fund must be preserved. Everything we produce is of absolutely no use.”

RADENKO ARSENOVIĆ, milk producer

“That corn has no energy value, no nutrition, it’s all shriveled, picked up, it’s not even for livestock use. The people will start selling cattle and reducing production”.

In the dairy industry, they point out that end consumers, at least for now, should not worry about the rise in prices of milk and milk products.

DUŠKO CVIJETINOVIĆ, owner of the dairy

“I don’t think so, but I don’t decide on that, but I don’t think there will be a price increase. The last price increase was at the beginning of the year or in December, and this price is the whole year”.

Nevertheless, it is certain that the trend of production reduction will continue because producers are forced to reduce the number of milking heads under the pressure of a low purchase price, overpriced raw materials and a lack of labor, BHRT writes.
