Zelensky met with US Envoy Kellogg in Washington

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Ukraine Keith Kellogg in Washington on Monday, stressing that his upcoming talks with President Donald Trump will focus on security guarantees.

“First of all, I am grateful to the president for this invitation and the format that we will have. These are important signals about security guarantees. That is why it is important that we are together with the United States and Europe,” Zelensky said.

He added that the participation of key European partners would strengthen the process.

“We will have time to talk about the architecture of security guarantees. And that is, in my opinion, really the most important thing,” the Ukrainian president said.

Zelensky is scheduled to meet with Trump later in the day, after the U.S. president held a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday. Senior European leaders are also in Washington, preparing for crucial meetings on Ukraine.

Trump said after his talks with Putin that they had made “some progress,” although an agreement to end the war had not been reached.

Zelensky spoke by phone with Trump and European leaders over the weekend.

Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff said Sunday that Russia had agreed to the United States and Europe providing security guarantees to Ukraine as part of a potential peace deal.

Trump said Zelensky could end the war “almost immediately, if he wanted to,” reiterating that Kiev could not join NATO.
