The families of the victims from the villages of Zecovi and Briševo in Prijedor are commemorating 34 years since the war crimes committed in which numerous Bosniak and Croat civilians were killed. More than three decades later, the pain of losing loved ones is still present, while the families continue to search for the remains of the victims and insist on achieving justice through judicial processes.
On March 6, 2024, the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina confirmed the indictment in the case of Veljko Brajić and others, which charges the defendants Veljko Brajić, Slobodan Taranjac, Ranko Kaurin, Branko Dženopoljac and Draško Topić with having committed the criminal offense of crimes against humanity under Article 172, and all in connection with Article 180 and Article 29 of the Criminal Code of Bosnia and Herzegovina Herzegovina. The indictment charges them with planning and participating in the artillery and infantry attack on the village of Briševo, inhabited mainly by Croats. At least 61 people were killed in the attack, while three people are missing, and cases of rape have also been recorded.
According to the previously published indictment, at least 150 civilians of Bosniak nationality were killed in the area of Zecovo – in village 69, 20 civilians in other locations, 30 civilians of Bosniak nationality in camps in the area of Prijedor municipality, and the rest were killed in other locations and under other circumstances after persecution, as well as that the inhabitants of Zecovo were taken to the “Keraterm”, “Omarska” and “Trnopolje” camps.
The Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina sentenced Dušan Milunić to 12 years, Ilija Zorić to 20, Zoran Stojnić to eight, Zoran Milunić to 14 and Ljubiša Četić to five years in prison for crimes against humanity in Zecovi. The first-instance verdict sentenced Duško Zorić to 15 years.
