In a world where plans are meticulously crafted, sometimes the most incredible human stories unfold in unplanned moments and situations. Like a fairy tale! This is a story of taking risks, rejecting everything we know, and listening to our hearts.
The story of American Elizabeth Mineman Ellie, from Evergreen Park, Illinois, and Bosnian Senahid Saric, Senci, from Donji Vakuf, begins in a completely accidental encounter that not only gave birth to a deep connection but also set the stage for a life together that defies convention.
Trading security for uncertainty; with a backpack to Croatia
Completely burnt out from her job at a law firm and exhausted from preparing for final exams, Ellie made a life-changing decision to trade security for the unknown. She grabbed a backpack and embarked on a solo journey through Europe. Little did she know that this journey would take her to Split, Croatia, and eventually, to the love of her life, somewhere across the “white” world, Ellie shares.
Ellie boarded the first ferry to any island that was available at the time and ended up on Brac, specifically in the enchanting harbor of Supetar. Feeling lonely and worried about the lack of concrete plans, she stumbled upon a charming restaurant tucked away in an alley of this magical place, she added.
His “hello” was enough for love
“In a moment that could only be described as destiny, a cheerful voice broke the silence: ‘Hello!,’ and that’s how I met Senci from Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), the love of my life. It seems that the universe has been looking out for us from the very beginning,” begins the life called Ellie and Senci.
Senahid then decided to quit his job at the restaurant and thus began their life together as traveling content creators. Starting from BiH, Senci’s homeland, they explored its beauty and fell in love with its culture, landscapes, and hospitality. Elizabeth says that BiH captivated them from the very beginning—a country where every step was adorned with breathtaking scenes, warm embraces from people, and a rich history.
Discovering the beauties of the Balkans
“We continued our journey beyond BiH and ventured deeper into the Balkans, visiting Croatia, Slovenia, Montenegro, Albania, North Macedonia, and Bulgaria. Slovenia, with its charming capital Ljubljana, picturesque Lake Bled, cultural Maribor, and coastal town Koper, enchanted us with its incredible natural landscape,” Ellie and Senci pointed out.
Italy then brought a different rhythm, and peace in a mountain town, immersing themselves in the culture of “la dolce far niente” for 40 days. The next adventure was the Camino de Santiago – a pilgrimage of 500 miles across Spain. Choosing the Camino del Norte for its oceanic allure, they embarked on a journey that tested their limits. Blisters, illness, and physical challenges; they encountered everyday magic—moments of awe, shared laughter, and the realization that together they could overcome anything.
Yet, their hearts belonged to BiH
“The world unfolded before us, and yet, our hearts called us back to BiH. Our travel adventures led us into the unknown, but in the end, they left us yearning for the familiar embrace of our favorite place. BiH, with its mountains, blue rivers, and lush forests, became the backdrop of our love story,” they add.
Moreover, they say that the beauty is still reflected in the greatest BiH treasure – the people. The beauty lies in the people, the cuisine, and the vibrant culture that won their hearts, they point out. “The people, kind and encouraging, welcomed us into their world. The delightful cuisine, from burek to cevapi, offered a taste of tradition and homemade freshness that echoed through every bite. The blend of Islam, Ottoman influence, and Balkan culture created a vibrant tapestry that resonated.”
“We decided to take a break in our journey of life and settle in Travnik, with the perfect combination of grandeur, charm, and mountain views. In Travnik, we look out the window and see the fortress on top of the hill. The warm, enticing smell of cevapi fills the air,” Ellie and Senci conclude, Forbes writes.
