The newborn twins were killed in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza while their father was at the local government office to register their birth.
Asser, a boy, and Ayssel, a girl, were only four days old when their father, Mohammed Abu al-Qumsan, went to collect their birth certificates. While he was away, his neighbors called him to say that their house in Deir al-Balah had been bombed.
His wife and the twins’ grandmother were also killed in the attack.
“I don’t know what happened. I was told that a shell hit the house. I didn’t even have time to celebrate,” Qumsan said.
According to the AP news agency, the family followed an order to evacuate Gaza City in the first weeks of the Israel-Gaza war, seeking shelter in the central part of the Strip, as instructed by the Israeli military.
