The Croatian National Council (HNV) of B&H organized a commemoration yesterday in Sarajevo for the first anniversary of the death of Fr. Luke Markešić, the former President of the HNV of B&H and B&H Franciscans.
On this occasion, the former president of HNV of B&H and the Mayor of Sarajevo, Ivo Komšić, gave a speech about him as well as the associate professor at the Faculty of Law in Leipzig, Edin Šarčević, and professor at the University of Zagreb, Ivan Markešić.
“It seems unusual that a priest monk engaged himself so much outside of his priestly mission, and that he suffered so much because of it. However, Fr. Luke claimed that his faith demands such a commitment from him and not just any commitment, but the one against the evil and on the side of good. To oppose to evil here and now was not a matter of politics to him, but demand of his faith,” said Komšić.
Luka Markešić, he recalled, was the president of HNV of B&H, professor at the Franciscan School of Theology in Nedžarići, one of the initiators of “Light of the Word”, theologian and politician with a respectable opus.
“He was not building his career as politician, he remained humble monk, ordinary, sincere and always with the people. He actively defended every man,” said Komšić, adding that on this occasion he read his own text about Markešić.
Although he met Fr. Luka only a year before his death on the 7th of August 2014, Professor Šarčević said that 20 years ago, Markešić came into his life as a “rarely courageous voice of justice and reason.”
