Ahmetovic: Amendments to the Election Law must not draw ethnic Lines

During his visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), Adis Ahmetovic, a German parliamentarian from the Social Democratic Party (SPD), said that amendments to the Election Law should not draw ethnic lines.

Ahmetovic was in the delegation of German Minister for European Affairs Michael Roth, also a member of the SPD, who visited BiH. He reiterated that Germany supports the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Western Balkan states.

“We strongly criticize attempts of division and secession. They not only destabilize the region and the European Union (EU) but also lead to potential conflicts,” he told.

He called on BiH politicians to improve the living standards of citizens.

“We expect BiH to do everything it can to fight corruption and other irregularities. Institutions with democratic legitimacy must pursue policies that will enable a good life. Strengthening the economy, creating jobs, and, above all, enabling young people to have a future with hope and perspective. We support all democratic forces, “ Ahmetovic said.

He stressed that amendments to the Election Law must not further establish ethnic divisions.

“BiH has our support in meeting the 14 conditions of the EU to become a candidate for membership in the Union. However, an important basis for the future are changes to the Election Law that will be based on rights deriving from citizenship, not ethnic lines. There are elections in October, and voting rights should be enabled as soon as possible,” concluded German parliamentarian Adis Ahmetovic.

Minister Roth arrived in Sarajevo on November 30th, and he returned to Germany yesterday. He spoke with BiH Presidency Chairman Zeljko Komsic (DF), Presidency member Sefik Dzaferovic (SDA), and Foreign Minister Bisera Turkovic (SDA).

Earlier, he mentioned that the situation in BiH is a threat to peace throughout Europe and called for the unblocking of state institutions.
