Alarming: BiH could lose 594.000 Inhabitants

It is likely that Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) will be among the countries in the world that will experience a significant decrease in the number of inhabitants by 2050, “World of Statistics” announced on Twitter.

As they announced, from 2020 to 2050, the reduction in population will amount to 18.2 percent. Looking at the latest official statistical reports, BiH currently has 3.3 million inhabitants, which is 152.300 or 4.31 percent less than the 2013 census. This means that BiH could lose 594.000 inhabitants in the next 30 years. So, by 2050, the country should have between 2.7 and 2.8 million inhabitants.

However, the exact amount of this reduction cannot be determined because BiH did not conduct a population census this year, although the statistical rule is that the census is conducted every ten years. It is not at all clear when the next census could be.

It should be noted that the influential British newspaper Economist announced in August 2020 that BiH will be among the countries where a significant decrease in the number of inhabitants will occur. They indicated that by 2050 it will have 2.7 million inhabitants.

This newspaper also announced at the beginning of this year that BiH will have the largest brain drain in the world – 51.3 percent of young people are interested in leaving the country.

According to the data published by “World of Statistics”, the countries that will have a greater decrease in population than BiH are Bulgaria (22.5 percent), Lithuania (22.1 percent), Latvia (21.6 percent), Ukraine ( 9.5 percent), and Serbia (18.9 percent).

Croatia is on this list right behind BiH (18 percent), while in North Macedonia the reduction should amount to 10.9 percent, Klix.ba reports.
