The decision to grant prior approval for the concession to Mostar Airport is the only item on the agenda of the session of the Mostar City Council, which is scheduled for June 10.
The American company AAFS Infrastructure Energy LLC, engaged in the Southern Gas Interconnection project, sent a letter of intent and offered an investment of 250 million euros for concessions over the airports in Sarajevo and Mostar.
The procedure is currently in the evaluation phase of the competent ministry in order to determine the existence of public interest, but the final decision on granting consent according to this model has not yet been made.
While the eventual concession of Sarajevo Airport would have to be approved by the Parliament of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the decision on Mostar Airport is within the competence of the Mostar City Council.
Councilors from the Bosniak Club, who have not participated in the work of the City Council for a long time, announced that they will attend this session precisely because of the importance of the American investment.
American interest in airport development
In April, the director of Mostar Airport, Marko Đuzel, and the chargé d’affaires of the US Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina, John Ginkel, met on this occasion.
As announced by the US Embassy, they discussed the possibilities of American expertise, equipment and resources helping to expand the airport, modernize the infrastructure and create a logistics and service center in Mostar that would serve the entire region.
“More jobs, tourism growth and better regional connectivity are opportunities that American investments can bring to Mostar International Airport “ the US Embassy announced.
What does the American offer mean?
During the meeting, the ways in which the American side could contribute to the development of the airport were discussed in detail.
The focus of potential cooperation is on the expansion of existing capacities with the help of American knowledge and resources, as well as on the modernization of infrastructure through the acquisition of new equipment and the improvement of existing facilities.
The realization of these plans could bring more direct flights to European destinations, which would further increase the tourist attractiveness of Herzegovina and strengthen the ties between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the United States of America, SeeBiZ reports.
The airport is experiencing strong growth
During April, Mostar Airport served 5,560 passengers, which represents an increase of 102.4 percent compared to the same month last year.
Such results further confirm the growing importance of the Mostar airport and the potential for new investments in its further development.
