An imam was shot in front of a mosque in Newark, New Jersey, in the United States of America (USA) early Wednesday morning, the authorities confirmed for Anadolu news agency.
The shooting happened at 6:16 a.m. (11:16 GMT) in front of the Muhamed Newark mosque. The victim, who was not identified by police, was taken to a nearby state University Hospital in critical condition.
The investigation is ongoing. Authorities declined to release additional information.
Multiple calls to the mosque requesting additional information about the incident were not answered.
NBC New York reported that the victim was Imam Hasan Sharif. A person by that name is listed on the mosque’s website as its resident imam.
