“We are witnessing the vampirization of fascism, the fascism that has never been successfully departed. We are witnessing nationalist tensions, we are witnessing the territorial claims of our neighbors, we are witnessing the clumsy policy of the international community, which always reacts too late. ” This is how the writer, columnist, and analyst from Montenegro, Andrej Nikolaidis assesses the situation in the Western Balkans.
In an interview, Nikolaidis said that it seems to him that the region has spent three decades in a kind of bad infinity, in a time loop from which we can not get out and in which “what was most negative in our lives and in the history of our societies, keeps coming back ”.
The Montenegrin writer believes that there are plans to redraw the borders in the Western Balkans and that this is supported by some representatives of the international community. According to him, those plans are in the form of Nacertanije (Draft), Mojevic’s homogeneous Serbia, Greater Serbia, the so-called Serbian World, the SANU Memorandum 1 and 2. As Nikolaidis claims, these are all facts.
Although European right-wingers often support the fears that someone is working on the creation of a unitary, Islamic Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), Andrej Nikolaidis pointed out that such fears are unfounded, and that the political dynamics are completely different.
“The reality tells us that some are actively working on the destruction of BiH, while there is no evidence that anyone is actively working on the creation of a unitary, and especially Islamic BiH. But it’s always like that for you. When you have a project that is corrupt and illegitimate, such as the project of destroying Bosnia, it is always necessary to find justification and cause fear. Unlike left-wing politics which is the politics of hope, right-wing is the politics of fear. And fear is powerful. Sowing fear of Islam, no matter how much we are used to such practices and policies, is actually very dangerous, because it contributes to the fear of phantom, non-existent danger that directly benefits European right-wingers who have no good intentions towards BiH and the Bosniak people, ” claims Andrej Nikolaidis.
He added that European politics has a serious and unfounded reservation towards Islam, and that only a great opportunist could say that in secular European societies, Christianity and Islam are treated in the same way.
Nikolaidis told that the question is now open whether Montenegro will resist and get out of the so-called “Serbian world” in which it is currently. It all depends on whether Milo Djukanovic will outwit Aleksandar Vucic at the end of the “chess game”, or vice versa.
