On yesterday‘s day in 1992, the proposals for the national emblem and flag of the independent Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina (RBiH) were adopted. They were officially unveiled on May 22nd in front of the United Nations (UN) Secretariat Building in New York, Klix.ba writes.

Doc. Dr. Emir Filipovic, the Department of History, Faculty of Philosophy, University of Sarajevo (UNSA) wrote about the adoption of the national emblem and the flag of the RBiH.

In the article The Nation Emblem and the Flag of BiH in the 20th Century, Filipovic states that work on creating a new national emblem began on February 27th, 1991, when the Socialist Republic (SR) of BiH Assembly decided to amend the Constitution and pass constitutional law on a name and state symbols.

The group that was supposed to determine the appearance consisted of eminent scientists: from the National Museum archaeologist Hasan-Mirza Ceman and historian Tihomir Glavas; from the Institute of History Dr. Boris Nilevic; and for the needs of the visual design of the ideal solution, independent designer Zvonimir Bebek was hired. Dr. Enver Imamovic was also on the team.

Members of this group suggested that the color be light blue, following the example of the UN. A new national emblem would stand on that flag, modeled on the national emblem from the seals from the medieval money of Bosnian rulers.

The national emblem from the cloak of King Tvrtko I Kotromanic, which was found in Arnautovici near Visoko, was used to identify the Bosnian medieval national emblem. The group suggested that the origin of the lily is based on the endemic Bosnian subspecies of the lily flower.

Filipovic further states that at the beginning of the war the group disbanded and the completion of the production process was taken over by Enver Imamovic and Zvonimir Bebek, who in the final proposal changed the base color from light blue to white, and the shield border from silver to gold.

At its session on May 4th, 1992, the Presidency of BiH accepted the proposed solution of the national emblem and the flag without any objections.
